i thought iâd make an faq filled with every excuse in the book about reposting, for those who still donât understand why itâs badâŚor for people who donât know what to say in retaliation to these! so here we go.Â
first of all, an artist doesnât even NEED to explain themselves. in the same way with someone who says âdude, make sure that soda is dietâ or âplease donât tickle meâ. they donât want you to do it. you donât need to test them by ignoring them. the reason doesnât matter: itâs the personâs wish with THEIR things. if you had any respect for others, youâd just take it at that.Â
BUT for some people, they donât want to respect others at face value, and want their reason. (which, i might add, is rude.) so letâs get into that:Â
but iâm giving you exposure! isnât that good?
no.Â
youâre not giving artists exposure. for people like myself, freelance artists, youâre hurting us. about a year ago, i sent my portfolio off to an indie game. in it, i had a piece of work that had been reposted (that i didnât even know about). i was told much later that they âlooked into itâ and saw that my work was posted by someone else, which means now they have no idea who the artist was, and THEREFORE canât be sure my work was legit. i lost a potential job to a repost.Â
doesnât matter if you say âi didnât draw thisâ. sometimes, they donât even look. they just look to see if itâs on any site other than your own. and thatâs terrifying for artists. so donât endanger our livelihood for instagram likes.Â
besides, youâre not even giving exposure if you didnât credit, cropped out the signature, or somehow made the resolution so low to where you canât even see the signature. which brings me toâŚ
but i credited you!
some people still donât want it reposted even with credit. the last answer should show you one of the many reasons why.Â
youâre dictating what i can/cannot put on my page! this is MY page!
and itâs MY art you posted. you canât take something i did and do whatever you want with it. imagine if you took someones drawing, photocopied it, and spread it all around the town without their permission. theyâd have every right to be angry, right?
but you posted it online, which means anyone can do anything with it. so if you donât want it reposted, donât post it online!
i have to post my art onto my websites to build a fanbase, something crucial to an artist. it shouldnât be on ME to not post it in the first place, it should be on YOU to not repost it. youâre just echoing victim-blaming arguments.Â
youâre basically saying âif you donât want to be bullied, donât exist.â which is a terrible thing to teach people, rather than âbe nice and respectful towards others.â yes, i know our world isnât perfect. but thatâs no excuse to contribute to vile things.Â
well i would be honored if someone reposted my art. and my friend doesnât mind reposts, so why should you?
good for you! good for them! but did you know thereâs more people in the world other than just you and your friend? we have wishes and feelings too, so you donât get to project your own emotions onto what WE should be feeling as well. i love peaches. some people donât like them. that doesnât mean that now they have to eat peaches because i donât mind them.Â
what an artist creates automatically belongs to society, though.Â
go steal the mona lisa and tell me how that works out.Â
everyone can VIEW it, yes. artists want others to view their work! we just donât want you to do stuff with it we asked you not to do.Â
WELL THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, since i canât put your work on redbubble and sell it for myself, why do you have an umbrella of the starry night?? huh?? you STOLE van goghâs work! (yes people have legit said this to me)Â
putting my work on items and selling it is totally illegal. van goghâs work is owned by companies now, who have authorization to print it on things. and iâm just ONE freelance artist who is, you know, still alive and not giving permission to do that. you canât compare a dead artist from the 1800s to a digital artist in 2017. apples to oranges, my dude.
well i SAID âcredit to the artistâ so i DID give you credit!
because saying âthe artistâ really tells people who i am and lets them visit my websites! thank you so much!Â
but all sarcasm aside, that doesnât do anything other than show you were too lazy to find the artist. same thing with âsource: the internetâ and âwho drew this xDâ or misspelling my url on purpose or putting the credit under a cut. OR cropping the image to cut off my signature! you didnât give me credit.Â
it wasnât on the website i wanted it on! you should have more social media.
iâll have the social media i want to have. not up to me to make more accounts on more things just so you wonât disrespect me.Â
but i donât remember where i got it. besides, i reposted SOOO much work and saved it all a long time ago. how can i find it now?
reverse google image search is so great.
also, if you didnât know the artist, thatâs a HUGE reason not to repost it in the first place!! you didnât even know if it was okay since you never got to see their position on that!!
take down your video with stolen fan art. take down your entire fan art twitter account. i donât care âhow hard it was to save those imagesâ or âhow many views you have nowâ. you got all that attention from someone elseâs hard work. searching for art will never be as hard as making it. if it were that easy, youâd be drawing all the art yourself.Â
but i asked the artist and they didnât say anything! i assumed it was okay.Â
yeah, i feel you. itâs the same thing as when you ask your mom if you can borrow some money, she doesnât answer, so you just steal it from her purse. no answer means the answer you want to hear, right?
wrong. donât take âunresponsiveâ as a yes. thatâs disgusting.Â
well i honestly donât care. artists are just selfish. iâll repost their art if i want to, just to show them how much i hate their stance on reposting. and (insert another really edgy statement here from someone who only says things to get a rise out of people since their life is empty)Â
one day youâre gonna come across an artist who has no chill and wants to sue, and can actually do it, since some people put their work under HEAVY copyright. and iâm gonna kick back in my chair with a nice capri sun and watch it all happen, since you have that kind of attitude towards people.Â
yes, this whole thing seems a bit. well. âsaltyâ, as some would put it. and i have every right to be irritated over this. all these questions are asking âWHY should i respect their wishes? give me a reasonâ or âbut here is my excuse rather than just taking it downâ. time after time, artists are villainized just for telling people not to repost.Â
like i said, the artist not wanting you to repost it SHOULD be reason enough! weâre so tired of having to fight people just to have respect for our art. we have to deal with tracing constantly, so can you please take reposting off our plates? i know bad things will always happen, but thatâs no reason to make it worse by contributing.Â
artists are generously putting our art out there for free. if you want to keep seeing our art for free (btw we donât HAVE to, all the big artists could just up and leave and go to patreon), maybe show us some respect? because we get pretty dejected when we see strangers getting attention from something we did, and it makes us want to remove everything we show you guys. you say âdonât post it then!â but would be mad if all fan art disappeared.Â
if you want to keep the art, respect the artist making it. thereâs a real person behind that drawing.Â
i donât think people realize that when Gabe bounced at the end of 13X18, he was showing Dean MERCY.
Gabe knew that Dean would come in and get violently coercive (and he did: he screamed, shouted, threw things, expressed the urge to force Gabrielâs hand, and blamed everyone around him). Youâre probably saying, how would he know, itâs been so many years! But remember, Sam and Cas JUST UPDATED GABE on what went down when he was in Hell, and furthermore? Dean has ALWAYS been coercive with Gabe. See these earlier examples, including the famous âCanât or wonâtâ (KILL YOUR BIG BROTHER WHO RAISED YOU) speech:Â
1) Tall Tales. They start out recognizing a certain joie de vivre and love of using hedonism to cope with hardship in each other.Â
âI like you. âI donât want to hurt you, and you know that I can.â But after Tall Tales, it goes south quickly. Â
2) Mystery Spot. Gabe recognizes that Dean was the epicenter of TFWâs problems as early as Season Three, in Mystery Spot, after all, by forcing Sam to recognize their codependence. Sam was spared, rather than the reverse, for those nearly 100 times that Gabe killed Dean, because Gabe knew Sam would be the more receptive, malleable student of the pair. Â
3) Changing Channels. Dean is the one who repeatedly antagonizes Gabriel. He doesnât yet know heâs an Archangel, but he does know that heâs at least a powerful âdemigod Trickster,â and he still tests the boundaries of Gabeâs temper by relentlessly hounding and verbally baiting him.
Gabe gives him chance after chance to stop, and he doesnât respect the boundaries Gabe establishes. Because for Dean, itâs all for the cause. Itâs all a worthy sacrifice for the endgame, to âprotectâ everyone. So Gabe lashes out with physical intimidation, and with the notorious line, âDonât you ever, ever presume to know what I am.â Â
Later, Dean speeches (as Dean is wont to do) at Gabriel about what an asshole he is, only after he has strongarmed Gabe into submission with a ring of holy fire. He gets Gabe so riled up with taunts of Gabeâs alleged cowardice and cruelty, deigning sanctimoniously to turn on the sprinklers and free him, that Gabe is left paralyzed with fury, looking like this:Â
4) Hammer of the Gods. A tense exchange (the famous âbite me Gabrielâ and âmaybe later, big boyâ) in a private room of the Elysian Fields Hotel, where Gabe has shown up to SAVE HIS FRIENDS FROM HIS MURDEROUS BROTHER, and of course Sam and Dean are there to fuck it up. And while Sam stops and listens to Gabeâs warnings, Dean baits and postures again, strongarming Gabriel (the exchange of wits about âcutting off their handsâ and âthen theyâll all be asking, âwhy do they have no handsâ â) into cooperating with the pair, which leads directly to Kali stabbing Gabe, and to the conversation in the Impala. Â
Interestingly GABE ALSO NOTICES THE BENEFICIAL/USEFUL SIDE OF DEANâS PERSONALITY, appealing to him in the Impala and later giving DEAN the video with the vital information with stopping the Apocalypse: because Gabe also knows that IF DEAN WANTS TO GET SHIT DONE, HE WILL (unfortunately, Gabe also knows down the line that this also can mean at the expense of others). Â
Whatâs the point of all these examples? Itâs that Gabe recognizes echoes of MICHAEL (and Lucifer and Raphael) and his ride-or-die complicit soldier mindset in Dean.
Did you all notice that it was when MICHAELâS name was dropped that Gabe panicked, stood, gestured frantically and RAN for the bunker door?
Because Michael is coming, and so is Dean. Â
Gabriel knows Dean, for all his flaws, is a force for good (âI put my money on you guys the last timeâ) and he even has some residual affection for TFW, so he doesnât want to kill Dean, which he would be forced to do if Dean cornered him, triggered him by once again demanding his Grace (what his abuser Asmodeus was taking for him via excruciating methods through violation and mutilation for over! seven! YEARS!).Â
Dean is the sort of person who says things like âhe doesnât GET to say noâ to and about a person who was robbed of agency and bodily/psychological autonomy for seven years. Gabe knows this, because he is an astute strategizer who knows human natue well, and because he also has heard his oldest brother say these things during all the wars in Heaven. So instead of lashing out at Dean, as he is now self-aware enough to know he would do, Gabe, who is conflict-avoidant anyway, leaves.
That people are shaming this act, I find outrageous. What would you do in his shoes, if you knew someone with a violent coercive temper was coming to demand of you precisely what traumatized you? Exhibit some compassion for someone outside the precious circle of protagonists, please. Â
Given the choice, Gabriel will always choose the least violent, confrontational option. Thatâs a good part of why he removed himself from the equation of the Apocalypse, AFTER PASSING ON VITAL INFORMATION TO THE WINCHESTERS FOR STOPPING IT.   âIâm not a team kind of guyâ is a face-saving excuse for someone who is still traumatized and scared shitless, who already on a good day hates fighting so much that it agonized him into leaving his birth-home.  Gabe is afraid of what Dean will do to reach Deanâs goal. Just like he is of Michael.Â
It was honestly, ironically, the most well-written part of the episode, that he left. Â
â"I donât want to hurt you, and you know that I can.â Â
And honestly, it will be interesting to see if my theory that Gabe jumps into Deanâs vessel rings true. That had better be HIS choice, not coercion. Â
Iâm not trying to hate on Dean here, btw. Iâm fond of Dean. Iâm just explaining what Gabriel knows, what he fears, and why.Â
Interesting theory that Gabriel might have foreseen how Dean would react. But Iâd TOTALLY forgotten he said that line in Tall Tales. The gifs and episode synopses really help so, on a related note:Â
Something Iâve been thinking about lately is Gabrielâs dialogue to Dean in that final Casa Erotica video about why heâd not wanted to fight.
âAnd Dean, you were right; I was afraid to stand up to my brother.â
This line was always the only thing I felt ever validated the âGabriel is a cowardâ mindset in the fandom, because he said it himself. But now that we know definitively that he was just pulling a Trickster, a whole new set of meanings became canon. Basically:
Misleading people about what he is and what he feels, just so both parties can move on, is kind of Gabrielâs thing. He repeatedly allows the people who are after him to think theyâve won!
So Gabriel was potentially just telling Dean he was right even though Gabriel himself didnât actually view it that way, just for the effect itâd have on Dean to hear it. Said another way: Gabriel was just telling Dean what he wanted to hear. Again.
Because yes, Dean did infamously ask Gabriel if he just âcanât or wonâtâ kill Lucifer. But you know what else Dean also said in that car? âItâs the best idea Iâve heard, so unless you have a better oneâŚâ
Well, as it would turn out, yes, he did have a better idea. Gabriel informed them in his final video, âWithout me, youâve got zero shot at killing Lucifer.â So in his usual way of avoiding-conflict-to-minimize harm, Gabriel found a way to do it all: He not only helped the boys protect humanity by telling them how to put Lucifer in the cage, and fake his death to avoid future confrontation, butÂ
Gabriel faked his own death to avoid killing his brother.
This archangel has always been and probably always will be a character that, if at all possible, will utilize avoidance for its most holy of purposes: to avoid harm. Likewise, he only uses conflict for its most holy of purposes: To bring justice. Whichâand thank you for the reminderâis remarkably something he completely summarizes himself as one of his first real lines in-character:
âI donât want to hurt you, and you know that I can.â
Matches that of deanâs (4 months = 40 years so 1 month = 10 years), and that Gabriel had been in Asmodeusâs clutches for about all of the 8 years he was âdeadâ thats 96 months), we can say that he was in hell for
About 1000 years, from his perspective.
Thatâs a fucking long time to correspond with a fucking lot of torture, belittlement, abuse, pain, suffering and trauma. And this is why Iâm so pissed off by people who are mad at Gabe for running off.
Like, no. That boy is extremely traumatized and needs time. Alone. Not bound by someone. As a devout Sabriel shipper, I would love to see Gabe stay and grind us out some more live-action hurt/comfort. I was honestly upset at first when he left. But I thought about it, and realized that Sam time is not what he needs. He needs to learn what itâs like to make his own choices again, to regain confidence. He needs to take time and remember who he is and that he is his own individual and that WONâT happen by staying and letting Dean shove his bullshit in him.
âHe doesnât get to say no!â HELL FUCKING YES HE DOES! Gabriel was forced into being somewhat ok way sooner than he should have so that he could protect Sam and Cas. And at that point, he was so desperate for a sliver of pride that he swallowed his pain and fear to look fine. And that was the most he could handle. Faking it 24/7 while simultaneously trying to heal his broken mind would be one of the worst things for him.
Staying behind takes away his life-long philosophy of flight over fight. He NEVER takes direct action on a conflict until absolutely necessary. He only pushed back his terror when Sam and Casâ lives were in danger and he was still reluctant. He only fought Lucifer because it was the only way to save Kali and the guys. He LEFT HEAVEN to avoid fighting.
When the confrontation is his own head, the only way to protect himself is to run away from it. He will return when he wants to because he owes them NOTHING. (I really hope he puts Dean in his place. I love Dean, but I know he wouldnât have wanted to be treated like that after he escaped hell either.)
Gabe enjoyed a casual life but he wasnât dumb and he took life plenty seriously. He isnât leaving to be a dick or anything. He left because he knows thatâs what he needed and he wants to heal. He DOESNâT CARE about the other universe or AU Michael because he doesnât need to and he owes nobody a favor or a pledge to alliance. He is and has always been a neutral player. Let him heal and he will help.
This has been a PSA. Thank you for reading.
