but why is reposting BAD?

incaseyouart:

fawnivy:

i thought i’d make an faq filled with every excuse in the book about reposting, for those who still don’t understand why it’s bad…or for people who don’t know what to say in retaliation to these! so here we go.

first of all, an artist doesn’t even NEED to explain themselves. in the same way with someone who says “dude, make sure that soda is diet” or “please don’t tickle me”. they don’t want you to do it. you don’t need to test them by ignoring them. the reason doesn’t matter: it’s the person’s wish with THEIR things. if you had any respect for others, you’d just take it at that.

BUT for some people, they don’t want to respect others at face value, and want their reason. (which, i might add, is rude.) so let’s get into that:

  • but i’m giving you exposure! isn’t that good?

no.

you’re not giving artists exposure. for people like myself, freelance artists, you’re hurting us. about a year ago, i sent my portfolio off to an indie game. in it, i had a piece of work that had been reposted (that i didn’t even know about). i was told much later that they “looked into it” and saw that my work was posted by someone else, which means now they have no idea who the artist was, and THEREFORE can’t be sure my work was legit. i lost a potential job to a repost.

doesn’t matter if you say “i didn’t draw this”. sometimes, they don’t even look. they just look to see if it’s on any site other than your own. and that’s terrifying for artists. so don’t endanger our livelihood for instagram likes.

besides, you’re not even giving exposure if you didn’t credit, cropped out the signature, or somehow made the resolution so low to where you can’t even see the signature. which brings me to…

  • but i credited you!

some people still don’t want it reposted even with credit. the last answer should show you one of the many reasons why.

  • you’re dictating what i can/cannot put on my page! this is MY page!

and it’s MY art you posted. you can’t take something i did and do whatever you want with it. imagine if you took someones drawing, photocopied it, and spread it all around the town without their permission. they’d have every right to be angry, right?

  • but you posted it online, which means anyone can do anything with it. so if you don’t want it reposted, don’t post it online!

i have to post my art onto my websites to build a fanbase, something crucial to an artist. it shouldn’t be on ME to not post it in the first place, it should be on YOU to not repost it. you’re just echoing victim-blaming arguments.

you’re basically saying “if you don’t want to be bullied, don’t exist.” which is a terrible thing to teach people, rather than “be nice and respectful towards others.” yes, i know our world isn’t perfect. but that’s no excuse to contribute to vile things.

  • well i would be honored if someone reposted my art. and my friend doesn’t mind reposts, so why should you?

good for you! good for them! but did you know there’s more people in the world other than just you and your friend? we have wishes and feelings too, so you don’t get to project your own emotions onto what WE should be feeling as well. i love peaches. some people don’t like them. that doesn’t mean that now they have to eat peaches because i don’t mind them.

  • what an artist creates automatically belongs to society, though.

go steal the mona lisa and tell me how that works out.

everyone can VIEW it, yes. artists want others to view their work! we just don’t want you to do stuff with it we asked you not to do.

  • WELL THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, since i can’t put your work on redbubble and sell it for myself, why do you have an umbrella of the starry night?? huh?? you STOLE van gogh’s work! (yes people have legit said this to me)

putting my work on items and selling it is totally illegal. van gogh’s work is owned by companies now, who have authorization to print it on things. and i’m just ONE freelance artist who is, you know, still alive and not giving permission to do that. you can’t compare a dead artist from the 1800s to a digital artist in 2017. apples to oranges, my dude.

  • well i SAID “credit to the artist” so i DID give you credit!

because saying “the artist” really tells people who i am and lets them visit my websites! thank you so much!

but all sarcasm aside, that doesn’t do anything other than show you were too lazy to find the artist. same thing with “source: the internet” and “who drew this xD” or misspelling my url on purpose or putting the credit under a cut. OR cropping the image to cut off my signature! you didn’t give me credit.

  • it wasn’t on the website i wanted it on! you should have more social media.

i’ll have the social media i want to have. not up to me to make more accounts on more things just so you won’t disrespect me.

  • but i don’t remember where i got it. besides, i reposted SOOO much work and saved it all a long time ago. how can i find it now?

reverse google image search is so great.

also, if you didn’t know the artist, that’s a HUGE reason not to repost it in the first place!! you didn’t even know if it was okay since you never got to see their position on that!!

take down your video with stolen fan art. take down your entire fan art twitter account. i don’t care “how hard it was to save those images” or “how many views you have now”. you got all that attention from someone else’s hard work. searching for art will never be as hard as making it. if it were that easy, you’d be drawing all the art yourself.

  • but i asked the artist and they didn’t say anything! i assumed it was okay.

yeah, i feel you. it’s the same thing as when you ask your mom if you can borrow some money, she doesn’t answer, so you just steal it from her purse. no answer means the answer you want to hear, right?

wrong. don’t take “unresponsive” as a yes. that’s disgusting.

  • well i honestly don’t care. artists are just selfish. i’ll repost their art if i want to, just to show them how much i hate their stance on reposting. and (insert another really edgy statement here from someone who only says things to get a rise out of people since their life is empty)

one day you’re gonna come across an artist who has no chill and wants to sue, and can actually do it, since some people put their work under HEAVY copyright. and i’m gonna kick back in my chair with a nice capri sun and watch it all happen, since you have that kind of attitude towards people.

yes, this whole thing seems a bit. well. “salty”, as some would put it. and i have every right to be irritated over this. all these questions are asking “WHY should i respect their wishes? give me a reason” or “but here is my excuse rather than just taking it down”. time after time, artists are villainized just for telling people not to repost.

like i said, the artist not wanting you to repost it SHOULD be reason enough! we’re so tired of having to fight people just to have respect for our art. we have to deal with tracing constantly, so can you please take reposting off our plates? i know bad things will always happen, but that’s no reason to make it worse by contributing.

artists are generously putting our art out there for free. if you want to keep seeing our art for free (btw we don’t HAVE to, all the big artists could just up and leave and go to patreon), maybe show us some respect? because we get pretty dejected when we see strangers getting attention from something we did, and it makes us want to remove everything we show you guys. you say “don’t post it then!” but would be mad if all fan art disappeared.

if you want to keep the art, respect the artist making it. there’s a real person behind that drawing.

This is THE best post on Tumblr.

Gabe ran because Dean is still like Michael (and Gabe and Dean are adversarial)

embrrssed-love:

illusivexemissary:

i don’t think people realize that when Gabe bounced at the end of 13X18, he was showing Dean MERCY.

Gabe knew that Dean would come in and get violently coercive (and he did: he screamed, shouted, threw things, expressed the urge to force Gabriel’s hand, and blamed everyone around him). You’re probably saying, how would he know, it’s been so many years!  But remember, Sam and Cas JUST UPDATED GABE on what went down when he was in Hell, and furthermore?  Dean has ALWAYS been coercive with Gabe. See these earlier examples, including the famous “Can’t or won’t” (KILL YOUR BIG BROTHER WHO RAISED YOU) speech:

1) Tall Tales. They start out recognizing a certain joie de vivre and love of using hedonism to cope with hardship in each other.

image

“I like you.  “I don’t want to hurt you, and you know that I can.”  But after Tall Tales, it goes south quickly.

2) Mystery Spot.  Gabe recognizes that Dean was the epicenter of TFW’s problems as early as Season Three, in Mystery Spot, after all, by forcing Sam to recognize their codependence. Sam was spared, rather than the reverse, for those nearly 100 times that Gabe killed Dean, because Gabe knew Sam would be the more receptive, malleable student of the pair.

image

3) Changing Channels. Dean is the one who repeatedly antagonizes Gabriel.  He doesn’t yet know he’s an Archangel, but he does know that he’s at least a powerful “demigod Trickster,” and he still tests the boundaries of Gabe’s temper by relentlessly hounding and verbally baiting him.

image

Gabe gives him chance after chance to stop, and he doesn’t respect the boundaries Gabe establishes.  Because for Dean, it’s all for the cause.  It’s all a worthy sacrifice for the endgame, to “protect” everyone.  So Gabe lashes out with physical intimidation, and with the notorious line, “Don’t you ever, ever presume to know what I am.”

image

Later, Dean speeches (as Dean is wont to do) at Gabriel about what an asshole he is, only after he has strongarmed Gabe into submission with a ring of holy fire. He gets Gabe so riled up with taunts of Gabe’s alleged cowardice and cruelty, deigning sanctimoniously to turn on the sprinklers and free him, that Gabe is left paralyzed with fury, looking like this:

image

4) Hammer of the Gods. A tense exchange (the famous “bite me Gabriel” and “maybe later, big boy”) in a private room of the Elysian Fields Hotel, where Gabe has shown up to SAVE HIS FRIENDS FROM HIS MURDEROUS BROTHER, and of course Sam and Dean are there to fuck it up.  And while Sam stops and listens to Gabe’s warnings, Dean baits and postures again, strongarming Gabriel (the exchange of wits about “cutting off their hands” and “then they’ll all be asking, ‘why do they have no hands’ ”)  into cooperating with the pair, which leads directly to Kali stabbing Gabe, and to the conversation in the Impala.

image

Interestingly GABE ALSO NOTICES THE BENEFICIAL/USEFUL SIDE OF DEAN’S PERSONALITY, appealing to him in the Impala and later giving DEAN the video with the vital information with stopping the Apocalypse: because Gabe also knows that IF DEAN WANTS TO GET SHIT DONE, HE WILL (unfortunately, Gabe also knows down the line that this also can mean at the expense of others).

image

What’s the point of all these examples?  It’s that Gabe recognizes echoes of MICHAEL (and Lucifer and Raphael) and his ride-or-die complicit soldier mindset in Dean.

Did you all notice that it was when MICHAEL’S name was dropped that Gabe panicked, stood, gestured frantically and RAN for the bunker door?

Because Michael is coming, and so is Dean.

Gabriel knows Dean, for all his flaws, is a force for good (”I put my money on you guys the last time”) and he even has some residual affection for TFW, so he doesn’t want to kill Dean, which he would be forced to do if Dean cornered him, triggered him by once again demanding his Grace (what his abuser Asmodeus was taking for him via excruciating methods through violation and mutilation for over! seven! YEARS!).

Dean is the sort of person who says things like “he doesn’t GET to say no” to and about a person who was robbed of agency and bodily/psychological autonomy for seven years.  Gabe knows this, because he is an astute strategizer who knows human natue well, and because he also has heard his oldest brother say these things during all the wars in Heaven. So instead of lashing out at Dean, as he is now self-aware enough to know he would do, Gabe, who is conflict-avoidant anyway, leaves.

That people are shaming this act, I find outrageous.  What would you do in his shoes, if you knew someone with a violent coercive temper was coming to demand of you precisely what traumatized you? Exhibit some compassion for someone outside the precious circle of protagonists, please.

Given the choice, Gabriel will always choose the least violent, confrontational option.  That’s a good part of why he removed himself from the equation of the Apocalypse, AFTER PASSING ON VITAL INFORMATION TO THE WINCHESTERS FOR STOPPING IT.     “I’m not a team kind of guy” is a face-saving excuse for someone who is still traumatized and scared shitless, who already on a good day hates fighting so much that it agonized him into leaving his birth-home.   Gabe is afraid of what Dean will do to reach Dean’s goal.  Just like he is of Michael.

It was honestly, ironically, the most well-written part of the episode, that he left.

“"I don’t want to hurt you, and you know that I can.”

And honestly, it will be interesting to see if my theory that Gabe jumps into Dean’s vessel rings true. That had better be HIS choice, not coercion.

I’m not trying to hate on Dean here, btw. I’m fond of Dean. I’m just explaining what Gabriel knows, what he fears, and why.

Interesting theory that Gabriel might have foreseen how Dean would react. But I’d TOTALLY forgotten he said that line in Tall Tales. The gifs and episode synopses really help so, on a related note:

Something I’ve been thinking about lately is Gabriel’s dialogue to Dean in that final Casa Erotica video about why he’d not wanted to fight.

  • “And Dean, you were right; I was afraid to stand up to my brother.”

This line was always the only thing I felt ever validated the “Gabriel is a coward” mindset in the fandom, because he said it himself. But now that we know definitively that he was just pulling a Trickster, a whole new set of meanings became canon. Basically:

  • Misleading people about what he is and what he feels, just so both parties can move on, is kind of Gabriel’s thing. He repeatedly allows the people who are after him to think they’ve won!
  • So Gabriel was potentially just telling Dean he was right even though Gabriel himself didn’t actually view it that way, just for the effect it’d have on Dean to hear it. Said another way: Gabriel was just telling Dean what he wanted to hear. Again.
  • Because yes, Dean did infamously ask Gabriel if he just “can’t or won’t” kill Lucifer. But you know what else Dean also said in that car? “It’s the best idea I’ve heard, so unless you have a better one…”
  • Well, as it would turn out, yes, he did have a better idea. Gabriel informed them in his final video, “Without me, you’ve got zero shot at killing Lucifer.” So in his usual way of avoiding-conflict-to-minimize harm, Gabriel found a way to do it all: He not only helped the boys protect humanity by telling them how to put Lucifer in the cage, and fake his death to avoid future confrontation, but
  • Gabriel faked his own death to avoid killing his brother.

This archangel has always been and probably always will be a character that, if at all possible, will utilize avoidance for its most holy of purposes: to avoid harm. Likewise, he only uses conflict for its most holy of purposes: To bring justice. Which–and thank you for the reminder–is remarkably something he completely summarizes himself as one of his first real lines in-character:

“I don’t want to hurt you, and you know that I can.”

archangelgabriellives:

I’m just gonna start mentally preparing myself now for the flash back scene of the pagans sewing Gabriel’s mouth shut.

It’s gonna be bad, and I’m gonna cry.

Why have you done this to me? I knew it back when we first saw him, but you have reminded me and now I’m tearing up

universe-in-a-botte:

Assuming the Hell Timeline

Matches that of dean’s (4 months = 40 years so 1 month = 10 years), and that Gabriel had been in Asmodeus’s clutches for about all of the 8 years he was ‘dead’ thats 96 months), we can say that he was in hell for

About 1000 years, from his perspective.

That’s a fucking long time to correspond with a fucking lot of torture, belittlement, abuse, pain, suffering and trauma. And this is why I’m so pissed off by people who are mad at Gabe for running off.

Like, no. That boy is extremely traumatized and needs time. Alone. Not bound by someone. As a devout Sabriel shipper, I would love to see Gabe stay and grind us out some more live-action hurt/comfort. I was honestly upset at first when he left. But I thought about it, and realized that Sam time is not what he needs. He needs to learn what it’s like to make his own choices again, to regain confidence. He needs to take time and remember who he is and that he is his own individual and that WON’T happen by staying and letting Dean shove his bullshit in him.

“He doesn’t get to say no!” HELL FUCKING YES HE DOES! Gabriel was forced into being somewhat ok way sooner than he should have so that he could protect Sam and Cas. And at that point, he was so desperate for a sliver of pride that he swallowed his pain and fear to look fine. And that was the most he could handle. Faking it 24/7 while simultaneously trying to heal his broken mind would be one of the worst things for him.

Staying behind takes away his life-long philosophy of flight over fight. He NEVER takes direct action on a conflict until absolutely necessary. He only pushed back his terror when Sam and Cas’ lives were in danger and he was still reluctant. He only fought Lucifer because it was the only way to save Kali and the guys. He LEFT HEAVEN to avoid fighting.

When the confrontation is his own head, the only way to protect himself is to run away from it. He will return when he wants to because he owes them NOTHING. (I really hope he puts Dean in his place. I love Dean, but I know he wouldn’t have wanted to be treated like that after he escaped hell either.)

Gabe enjoyed a casual life but he wasn’t dumb and he took life plenty seriously. He isn’t leaving to be a dick or anything. He left because he knows that’s what he needed and he wants to heal. He DOESN’T CARE about the other universe or AU Michael because he doesn’t need to and he owes nobody a favor or a pledge to alliance. He is and has always been a neutral player. Let him heal and he will help.

This has been a PSA. Thank you for reading.

(Feel free to add your own opinion and I apologize for this being disorganized.)
