Gabriel had never been a cat person.

Not until he met Creamsicle anyway. He still couldn’t figure out how his cousin Balthazar had tricked him into holding the flea ridden, dirty mess of a kitten they found huddled with his two sibling under his aunt’s deck, but from the moment Gabriel touched him, that cat had wrapped him around his little finger.

Maybe Gabriel had sensed that Creamsicle as he would come to be named, shared a kindred spirit. He was never a cat that Gabriel would keep in the house, even as a kitten. He’d claw, and make a ruckus until Gabriel opened the door. He didn’t mind, it saved him from having a stinky litter box to clean.

The first time Creamsicle went missing, Gabriel panicked. He put up posters, and called all the local shelters, the whole nine yards, but a week later, Creamsicle strode back into Gabriel’s house like he’d never left.

Gabriel got used to it.

~~~~~~~
Sam had never been a cat person.
He’d wanted a dog for as long as he could remember but between his brother’s allergies and their small apartment, and then his own, he could never had one. He was adamant that he didn’t like cats, until a bedraggled orange mess of a cat had plopped itself down in his lap and started purring.
Sam liked to say that Toffee, as he would later be called, was a dog in a cat’s body. He slept on Sam’s pillow, and in his laundry basket, covering all his flannels in orange cat hair.  He came and went as he pleased, often disappearing for days at a time, but he never failed to return.The first time, he’d been gone for two weeks, and Sam thought that was it, that the cat had exited his life in much the same way he had entered it, but he was wrong.
He came home from work one day to find Toffee curled up on his bed, purring loudly in his sleep.
Sam couldn’t help but smile.
~~~~~~

When three weeks had passed without hide nor hair of Creamsicle, Gabriel began to get worried. Two weeks was the longest he’d ever been away, and Gabriel was starting to fear the worst. He hadn’t seen any cats of the side of the road, and he kept a tab on the missing pets social media posts in his network, nothing. He finally decided to take a trip down to the local shelter to see if anyone had picked Creamsicle up thinking he was a stray. Gabriel wouldn’t blame them, Creamsicle had a way of looking like a pitiful creature, especially when he wanted food.

His friend Charlie often volunteered at the shelter, and she was sitting at the desk when Gabrel arrived fifteen minutes later.

“Hey Charlie!” he greeted her, leaning his elbows on the desk. “Can you let me back into the cat room?”

Charlie raised an eyebrow at him. “I didn’t know you were in the market for another cat, Creamsicle seemed like enough for you.”

Gabriel laughed. “He is, but the little monster has pulled a disappearing act, and I was wondering if he was here.”

“You’re the second person whose come in here looking for their cat today, Sam’s still in there,” she told him, leading him back. “But feel free to take a look.”

Gabriel followed Charlie back to the room where they kept all the rescue cats. After he’d gotten Creamsicle, he’d spent a couple hours back here, happy to offer a helping hand to his beloved pet’s more unfortunate brethren.

Inside, there was the tallest man that Gabriel had ever seen, with long dark hair, wearing a green flannel shirt. He was handsome, with green eyes and if Gabriel had been anywhere else, Gabriel would definitely try to flirt with him, but not right now.  He was looking in the cages with interest.

“Looking for someone?” Gabriel asked, offering a smile.

The man looked at him. “Yeah, actually, My cat Toffee, he’s been missing for a bit, and I got worried,”

Gabriel nodded. “My cat too,” he told the man, looking into the cages. “Creamsicle is a bit of a wanderer, but he always comes home,”

They both busied themselves looking, Gabriel starting on one end and the man starting on the other. One by one, they looked until they came to the middle, and Gabriel breathed a sigh of relief.

Creamsicle was sitting in the middle cage, looking at Gabriel with a smug cat smirk from through the metal bars.

“There you are,” Gabriel said. “Creamsicle”

“Toffee.”

Gabriel started up at the man as he got closer. “What?”

“That’s my cat, Toffee,” the man said again, giving Gabriel a confused look.

Gabriel shook his head. “No, you got that wrong, buddy. That’s my cat, Creamsicle.”

“I think I would know my own cat,” the man sniffed, his face settling into the most epic bitch face Sam had ever seen.

“Watch this,”Gabriel said. He turned to the cat. “Creamsicle knows his name, right buddy?” He put on his best baby voice. “Creamsicle!”

The cat meowed, and Gabriel smiled.

“Toffee!”

The cat meowed again.

Gabriel frowned. The cat sitting the the cage before him was his cat, he was sure of it. “When did you get Toffee?”

“He just wandered into my apartment,” the man told him. “He sat on my lap and started purring, he looked starving.”

“I’ve had Creamsicle since he was a kitten,” Gabriel protested. “He has freckles on the inside of his lip.” Gabriel opened the cage and took Creamsicle into his arms. Giving the cat a quick chin scratch, he opened his mouth, showing the man the little black dots on the cat’s inner lip. “See?”

“Toffee has those too,” the man replied.

Suddenly Gabriel had a realization. “Say, where do you live?”

“Shoemaker Road, why?”

Gabriel began to laugh, petting the cat’s head fondly. “I think we’ve both been had,”

The man looked confused. “What do you mean?”

“I live on Shoemaker too, in the house next to the apartment building,” Gabriel explained as the cat began to purr in his arms. “I think Creamsicle and Toffee are the same cat. The little monster has been conning us,”

The man began to join in on Gabriel’s laughter, and he reached over to pet Creamsicle-Toffee. “You little bastard,” he told the cat, who had the balls to look happy about all of this. “I’m Sam by the way,” he held out his hand and Gabriel took it.

“Gabriel,” he told him, a rush of courage overtaking him. “So I think we should probably talk over a custody agreement, say over dinner?”

Sam opened his mouth and then closed it again, his lips curling into a grin. “I’d like that.”

They didn’t know Charlie was behind them until she told the story at their wedding two years later.

Creamsicle-Toffee Winchester-Novak, served as their ring bearer.

Summary:

Sam is sick, and what are his boyfriends to do but take care of him?

~~~~
“Achoo!”
Gabriel’s boyfriend was sick. It had started a couple days ago when Sam started sneezing. He’d insisted it was just allergies, but Gabriel hadn’t been so sure.
It has escalated from there.
Next came the runny nose and incessant coughing, then the aches and headaches. Finally, the bone deep weariness and then Sam was forced to admit that maybe, just maybe he was sick.
Gabriel stirred a healing spoonful of honey into the cup of green tea he was making for Sam. There was something about Sam when he was sick that just made Gabriel want to coddle and baby him.
He shuffled across the floor, the soles of his slippers hitting against the wood with a loud slap. Gabriel gently pushed open the door of their bedroom and put the steaming cup down on the bedside table.
“No more tea, Gabe,” Sam sniffled, wiping his nose with a tissue. The garbage can was almost overflowing with them.
“C’mon Sammich,” Gabriel coaxed, sitting down on the edge of their bed. “It’ll make you feel better.”
“Not if I throw up first,” Sam retorted, snuggling down further under the worn comforter that had belong to Gabriel’s mother. “I hate green tea.”
Gabriel chuckled at him. “It’ll soothe your throat and the honey will stop you from cough,”
“You keep saying that,” Sam grumped, glaring at his boyfriend, but with how sick he was, he only looked like a pouty child which Gabriel found adorable.
“Because it’s true,” Gabriel pointed out. “Now drink up”
Sam grumbled at him again, but picked up the cup anyway and took a sip. He replaced it on the table and let Gabriel cuddle and fuss over him.
“You’re going to catch my cold,” Sam warned him, as Gabriel kissed his forehead.
“No, I’m not, I have the immunes system of an elephant,” Gabriel teased, tucking Sam in tighter as he heard the front door open and close. A moment later, Crowley came through their bedroom door, bearing a brown paper back and taking off his black and red plaid scarf.
“How are you feeling, love?” he asked Sam, hanging his coat in the closet and handing Gabriel the bag.
“Like crap,” Sam replied. “And Gabriel is making me drink tea.”
“It’s good for you,” Crowley replied, sitting down on the other side of the bed. “I brought you some soup.”
Gabriel unwrapped the bag, taking out a hot cup of the Matzo ball soup he’d asked Crowley to pick up on his way home from work. Gabriel had sick time to spare, but Crowley didn’t, so it was decided that Gabriel would stay home to take care of Sam.
He pulled a plastic spoon out of the bag and handed both the cup and spoon to Sam. “Eat,”he commanded. “It’ll make you feel better.”
Sam stuck his tongue out at him, but he took the soup without another word. He began to eat it, and Gabriel turned to his other boyfried.
“How was work?”
Crowley shrugged as he got up and began to change out of his suit, and into something a little more comfortable, the very comfortable, very expensive red and black silk pajamas that Gabriel and Sam had gotten him for Christmas. “It was work,” he replied. “I would have much rather been home with you two.”
Gabriel got up  and walked across the room to give Crowley a kiss. Sam made a disgruntled noise on the bed.
“That’s not fair,” he pouted. “I can’t kiss anyone.”
“You’re sick,” Gabriel pointed out. “When you’re better, we’ll make up for it, won’t we babe?”
Not many people understood the kind of relationship the three of them had, but Gabriel didn’t care. He loved both Sam and Crowley and they loved him in returned. That was all that mattered.
Crowley nodded and got into bed besides Sam. “We’ll keep you company,” he said, grabbing the remote.
Gabriel slid in on the other side of Sam. “Finish your soup and we’ll even let you pick the movie.”
Sam paused to kiss each of them chastely on the cheek. “Deal,”
Gabriel should have known better.
It took a week for both Crowley and Gabriel to come down with Sam’s cold. Gabriel woke up feeling like a truck hit him, and if Crowley’s cough was anything to go by, he wasn’t feeling much better than Gabriel was.
Both of them were terrible patients. Crowley was insistent on going to work, until Sam ordered him to bed and hid his iPad so he could rest. Gabriel gor halfway down the stairs before he’d realized Sam had also hidden his car keys. He called Garth to let him know he’d be late to the studio.
“Sam already called,” Garth explained with a chuckle. “Feel better.”
Grumbling, and cursing under his breath, Gabriel stomped back upstairs to give Sam a piece of his mind, to find his boyfriend in the kitchen making cinnamon pancakes with whipped cream and lots of sprinkles, his favorite. He couldn’t be mad at Sam after that.
He quietly slipped back into their bedroom, changed into his pajamas and cuddled up next to the dozing Crowley.
Maybe being sick wouldn’t be so bad afterall.
hey do you ever think about how gabriel seemed to be prepared to at least try to fix heaven despite what he thought of himself and that he’d developed to the point where he wanted to fight for what he loves which is his brethren and his home and ended up choosing a human over it? ended up choosing a human over heaven from which he was one of the first created, one of the angels who had lived there since the beginning as well as over the other angels who we know he loves dearly and hates seeing slaughtered or fighting? how he made that choice himself willingly? how he took one look at that human and decided that that human’s life was more important to him than everything else? how he selflessly died for that human, just to give him a chance to escape? how that human was sam? cause i do.
~~~~~~

That night, when Sam came back, Gabriel didn’t want to let him go.

He didn’t believe his eyes at first when Sam showed up back at the camp. Gabriel thought he was a hallucination, that the overwhelming sense of pain and loss he felt inside him had cruelly manifested into the spectral form of his now dead lover, but he wasn’t. He’d known what had happened the moment he saw Lucifer’s smug face behind Sam, and he only barely avoided tearing into his brother for what he’d done.

He brought Sam back, but only as a bargaining chip.

But the sight of Sam, alive, dirty and bloody, but alive, bottled Gabriel’s anger at his brother, at least for the time being. There were more important matters to attend to.  He waited until Dean, Mary, Castiel and Jack had said their pieces before he pulled Sam away.

Gabriel tugged him down, pulling Sam into the tightest hug he could muster. He felt the air leave Sam’s lungs, and a small chuckle escaped between them as Sam hugged him back.

“Miss me?”

Gabriel bit back the urge to snap at him, he knew first hand not everyone got second chances (or third or fourths in Sam’s case) and he didn’t want to mar this with his misplaced anger. “Don’t you ever do that to me again,” he said, trying fruitlessly to stop his voice from cracking.

“I’m fine, Gabriel, really I’m-” Sam tried to shake him off, but Gabriel wouldn’t let go. He buried his face in Sam’s neck, breathing in everything he was, everything that Sam meant to him, the heat and the hate and the love that had passed between them, and held him close.

“Don’t do that again.”

Sam softened against him, his large hands now burrowed in the curls at the nape of Gabriel’s neck. They just stood like that for a moment until the noise from outside became too much for them to ignore. Work called.

“Dean will be looking for you,” Gabriel muttered, letting go. He turned to leave, but Sam took his hand and pulled him back, pressing Gabriel’s knuckles gently to his lips.

“Hey,” Sam said, looking at Gabriel with those impossible eyes. “I’m sorry, I’ll be more careful.”

He leaned in to kiss him and Gabriel’s resolve crumbled. “You better be.”

Sam laughed and walked away, and as Gabriel watched him go, he knew he was fucked, truly and utterly fucked.

In that moment he knew he’d do anything for Sam Winchester. He’d follow him to the gates of Hell and back.

He didn’t know he’d signed his death warrant.
